About

Karuna is a sanskrit word that means “compassion.” More specifically, it translates into a concept known as “compassionate action” — the will to free all sentient beings from physical and emotional suffering.

“Suffering” is a term often used in Buddhist psychology to refer to the “challenging” states of physical, emotional and mental pain or discomfort. Needless to say, these experiences are plentiful and universal. While none of us can avoid some degree of physical and emotional pain, we can improve our responses to these situations when they occur. All of us in the human family can also probably do a better job of decreasing the likelihood of inflicting “pain” on ourselves and others (e.g., eating better, exercising more, being more supportive to those we love, lessening our carbon footprint, etc.).

The mission of karunaweb.com is to provide information and tools that help people reduce this “suffering,” starting with oneself. A reduction in “pain” means a gain in wellness for oneself and in turn, for those around them as well (albeit to varying degrees).

karunaweb.com was launched by me, Kimberly Pratt, MSW, LCSW: social worker/psychotherapist in private practice in San Francisco, CA; ardent proponent of personal growth, healing and development; proud spouse of 11+ years and co-parent of one chocolate lab and black cat; practitioner of mindfulness meditation; and lover of sports, movies, laughing and (the innate qualities of) the human race (i.e., not the negative conditioning).
